This week I am featuring Bree Pagliuso +Emma Udorovic from TWOSIX Wellness.
TWOSIX Wellness is a Melbourne based wellness hub that provides down-to-earth, and practical health and wellbeing programmes for corporates as well as inspirational content via their online platform. Yoga & Pilates Sessions, Nutrition & Mindfulness Articles, Workplace Wellbeing Workshops and so much more.
I hope you enjoy my interview with Bree and Emma.
Tell us a little bit about yourselves, your family, what you do and what inspired you to lead a healthier lifestyle?
Thanks to our wonderful husbands, we met almost 8 years ago now and quickly became the best of friends. We are so similar and coincidentally share the same birth date. 26th February… “TWOSIX”… cue light-bulb moment
A number of years ago we both faced a number of challenges with our physical and mental health that brought us closer together. After realising we both shared a passion for health, wellbeing and learning about our own mind and bodies connection we started to talk about how we could both lead a healthier life inside and out.
We both love practicing Yoga & Pilates, and both teach within the corporate space as apart of our TWOSIX Workplace Wellbeing programs, as well as in a few studios across Melbourne. Our friends and family and our little boys are our world, plus we call ourselves the self proclaimed LIFE ENTHUSIASTS because life should be lived with enthusiasm
What inspired you to start TWOSIX Wellness?
We both have a shared love and passion for all things health and wellness and were keen to spread awareness to the wider community. Our vision was to create a space dedicated to bringing relevant down-to-earth information to people without complicating it, and without ego.
After a long conversation over a delicious brunch one sunny Melbourne morning, TWOSIX Wellness – our online lifestyle hub was born.
Then a year later…we had both worked in a corporate environment for over 10 years, and had experienced first-hand the common sedentary lifestyle of corporates., and realised it often wasn’t by choice, but a full schedule and lack of time; it meant that health and wellbeing often became less of a priority in a busy lifestyle, with work-life balance not being a necessity but a luxury. We noted a gap within the market and that led to the expansion of our Online Wellness hub into Corporate Wellness Programs.
What exciting plans do you have coming up in 2017?
Oh we have so many fun things planned for the new year! Right now our website is being transformed into a one-stop-shop wellness hub, with a focus on our Workplace Wellbeing programs which are the heart of our business.
Also after a HUGE 2016 with our business and families we felt a little lost in our way so we sat down early January to chat about what our focus would be for 2017 and we decided to put all our energy into what is important and what drives us passionately – this is our TWOSIX Workplace Wellbeing Programs – we have been creating such wonderful tailored programs for almost 3 years, now we want to put our energy into one area and watch it flourish, so you will see lots of exciting projects and partnerships within this space.
What tips would you give to someone who is just starting to make changes to their health and wellness?
It’s so important to start with small changes, such as working in a healthy breakfast into your morning schedule. If you spend long hours in the office keep healthy snacks close by. Keep a water bottle close by to keep you hydrated and keep energy levels high. Start walking with work friends during your lunchtime break, dedicate saturday mornings to trying new fitness classes with a friend.
Do you have any tips for eating well on a budget?
Yes, we couldn’t believe more that planning is the key to sticking to a budget. All you need to do is devote 10-15 minutes every weekend to making a plan for the week, write a list ofwhat you need to buy at the grocery store or what type of healthy lunch you’re going to make, then buy a variety of yummy vegetables and fruits and cook ahead! Without a plan, you are likely to continue spending on foods you can easily make yourself and falling back into bad health habits.
What healthy dinner options would suggest to someone who is time poor?
Again, it’s all about planning ahead. If you cook in large batches you can make enough for 3 dinners in a row. Keep your freezer packed with organic meats and fish, and your cupboards packed with healthy legumes and grains, ones you can quickly cook up – cous cous only takes a minute or two to cook!
We also think it’s important to find a couple of healthy meals you love and make them a regular in your weekly dinners, something to look forward to and something that doesn’t take you long to whip up, we love an “all in” omelette on those nights you just cant bring yourself to cook a meal, we just throw in anything from the fridge and add the eggs and cheese if you have anything and tada, a delicious home made- packed with nutrients omelette.
What is something that you enjoy doing when you have some ‘me’ time?
We love to eat yummy meal with our friends and family or spend our mornings together going to a yoga and Pilates class.
What is your favourite recipe to cook? Can you share the recipe with us?
Meal time in the TWOSIX households can be a little crazy. Being working Mums with young and hungry bubbas it pays to make sure we’re organised. These Quinoa Fritters are a healthy go-to, are super easy to whip up and simple to re-heat. We cook them in bulk and freeze them so we always know there is a nutritious snack at arms reach – plus there are so many delicious ways to mix them up and keep it interesting!Print
- 1/2 cup (100g) quinoa ( you can leave this out if you don’t have any quinoa)
- 100g / ¾ cup plain or all purpose flour or Gluten Free Flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 medium egg
- 100ml / ½ cup milk
- 200g / 1 and ¾ cups frozen sweetcorn and peas ( or grated Zucchini)
- 1 spring onion, chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Olive Oil for the pan
- Cheese optional – we like to put a little parmesan
- For serving – if you have time add smashed Avocado
- Place ½ cup of quinoa and 1 cup water in a small saucepan over high heat, then cover and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 12-15 minutes or until the water has been absorbed and the quinoa is tender. Cool.
- Beat the eggs, milk and flour with the cooked quinoa together (makes sure the quinoa is cooled) then throw in the chopped spring onion, sweetcorn, peas (or any other veggie) and salt and pepper and cheese if you like. Mix well.
- Heat the oil in a large frypan over medium-high heat. In batches cook the patties for 3-4 minutes each side until golden and crisp. We like to use a tablespoon to measure out the mixture and place into the saucepan.
- Serve & eat
TO FREEZE: The cooked fritters will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, or they can be frozen by wrapping them individually in baking paper and placing in a freezer bag or container. Defrost them before warming in the oven or microwave.
